Despite our successful trips to Baja, we dared to venture into the Yucatan Peninsula, driven by a desire to experience its famed beauty up close. This decision came as our children, Daniel and our niece, were on a school break, presenting a perfect timing. However, the reality of our venture unfolded differently than anticipated.

We faced so many struggles…

High Costs and Poor Road Conditions

One of the immediate challenges we faced was the road infrastructure. Contrary to our expectations of smooth travels afforded by pricey tolls (TOs), we encountered roads in terrible condition. Our daily toll expenses ranged between $80 to $100, which, given the conditions, was exorbitantly high.

Furthermore, traffic jams were frequent, making the supposedly premium highways hardly worth their cost. The alternative routes, which were free, turned out to be less maintained, presenting risks we were not willing to take, especially after hearing from other drivers about safety concerns on these less-traveled roads.

High Fuel Costs and Quality Issues:

Fuel expenses and quality further complicated our journey. At one point, encountering water in our diesel tank became a frequent and daunting issue, adding stress and delay to our travel. At nearly every station, moments after refueling, we were forced to drain and service our tank, turning what should have been simple stops into prolonged, anxiety-filled pauses.

Unexpected Fuel Issues

Our difficulties peaked with fuel troubles. Shortly after refueling near Veracruz, a warning indicator alerted us to water contamination in our diesel tank—an issue we encountered repeatedly at various stations along our route. The necessity to constantly drain and treat our fuel tank not only delayed our journey but also posed a significant inconvenience, especially when traveling with young ones.

Inadequate Overnight Parking Options

Finding a safe and comfortable place to park overnight proved to be another daunting challenge. Unlike Baja, where beachfront parking was plentiful and scenic, the options in Cancun were limited to crowded Walmart parking lots or noisy gas stations that turned into impromptu nightclubs after dark. The lack of proper RV parks or designated camping areas added to our distress, detracting significantly from the tranquility and security we had experienced on previous trips.

Why Baja is a Superior Alternative for Van Lifers

Reflecting on our troubling experiences in Cancun and contrasting them with our travels to Baja, the differences were stark. Baja offered smoother roads with no toll fees, abundant and picturesque beachfront parking, and a more van-friendly environment overall. Facilities like water hookups, electricity, and clean showers were readily available for a minimal cost, enhancing the comfort of our stay.

Transitioning from a Challenging Van Life in Cancun to a Serene Stay in Tulum:

Given the struggles we faced, we eventually decided to rent a house in Tulum to enjoy a more stable and relaxing environment. This change allowed us to appreciate the local culture and beauty of Mexico without the constant worry about our next refueling stop or secure overnight parking.
