Van Taken By Mexican Police
May 14, 2024Were We Scammed By Mexico Authorities
May 28, 2024Our Van Was Confiscated In Mexico: Our Journey To Get It Back
Traveling can be filled with surprises, but none was more shocking than having our van confiscated in Mexico. We knew some of you might think this was a bad idea, but we have to give it another shot. Our lawyer advised us to return to Mexico to retrieve the van, or risk losing it to an auction.
The Confiscation Incident
To recap, our van was taken when we got stopped at a customs area in Mexico. We didn’t have the necessary TIP (Temporary Import Permit) for our van. Instead of turning us around as they usually do, they confiscated it. This left us stranded and scrambling for two to three days to either get our van back or arrange a safe flight home.
Despite The Chaos…
The Legal Process
A week has passed since the incident. We finally got an update from our attorney in Mexico. He advised us to return to Mexico with all the necessary documents, such as the title, registration, and insurance information. We have to submit these documents before April 31st to avoid losing the van to auction. The process could take up to four months, during which time we might accumulate storage fees and other charges.
Planning the Return Trip
Here’s the tricky part: we need to fly back to Mexico. We found flights costing around $700, which includes a round-trip flight, car rental, Airbnb, and gas. The only downside is a 12-hour drive upon arrival. Given our past experiences, we’re not sure if the savings are worth the risk. We don’t drive at night in Mexico, so this requires a stopover in a local town.
Meeting with the Lawyer
Once in Mexico, we’ll meet with our lawyer and head to the customs office to submit our documents. We need to prove the van is ours. Afterwards, we return home to wait for the customs office to verify our documents. This could take 4 to 6 months. Knowing we only have a few days left to make this happen adds to the stress.
Apprehensions and Concerns
We’re definitely uneasy about returning to Mexico. We’ve had bad luck already, and the towns we need to visit are not tourist-friendly. We stand out, especially with a rental car. We also have doubts about our lawyer. He has helped us so far, but needing to give him power of attorney to handle the van feels sketchy. We don’t trust easily, and the language barrier makes communication even more challenging.
Mercury Retrograde or Just Bad Luck?
Interestingly, it seems like everything started going wrong around April 1st, which coincides with the start of Mercury retrograde for Aries. We’ve faced all the classic retrograde problems: transport issues, contract delays, and communication breakdowns. Whether you believe in astrology or not, it’s hard not to notice the timing.
Moving Forward
Feeling split between moving forward and staying stuck, we wonder if we should just let it go. We want to resolve this issue but also want to live our lives without this weighing us down.
Your Support Keeps Us Going
Despite the chaos, we are grateful for the community’s support. Whether it’s through our GoFundMe, prayers, or simply your kind messages, your encouragement helps us more than you know. Negative comments? We see them, but they don’t help. Constructive feedback is always welcome, but negativity only adds to the stress.
Our Van Was Confiscated In Mexico: The Conclusion..?
Our journey isn’t over. We’ll continue to travel, even if it means going back to Mexico to retrieve our van. This experience has been taxing, but we hope to come out on the other side stronger. Thank you for sticking with us through this ordeal. Your support means the world to us.
