Canada Border Crossing Challenges at the Canadian Customs
With everything packed, including our passports and our dog Gypsy’s passport, we were ready to cross the border. This wasn’t our first time; Gypsy had already been to Canada and Mexico. Approaching Canadian customs, the experience started smoothly. However, it quickly turned into one of those unexpected Canada border crossing challenges we’ve heard about.
Dealing with the Tinted Windshield Issue
In Canada, tinted windshields are against the law. When we reached the customs officer, they pointed out our heavily tinted windshield. This was unexpected, considering no one had mentioned it during our previous border trip. The officer warned us we might get stopped in Canada and potentially asked to remove the tint.
They consulted with a supervisor but allowed us to pass, advising that if the Canadian Royal Mounted Police (RCMP) stopped us, we’d need to show documentation for medical reasons associated with the tint. These are the kinds of Canada border crossing challenges you don’t always anticipate.
Crossing from Eureka
We crossed the border from Eureka, after staying at a quaint RV park next to a creek. The small-town border had minimal traffic. This made the crossing swift, unlike bigger, busier borders. Though we had a smooth transition, the unexpected conversation about our windshield tint was a notable challenge.
The Officer Warned Us…
Exploring After the Border
Once across, we planned to visit Radium Hot Springs. We aimed to freshen up and get some relaxation after the crossing. However, since parking near the hot springs was tricky with our big van, we found an alternative spot about 20 minutes away for the night.
Embracing the Rainy Weather
We found a cozy dog park for Gypsy to stretch her legs, even though it involved a steep hike back from the valley. The aim was to tire her out before our visit to the hot springs. Our stay at the beachside park turned into an editing marathon due to rain. The weather often adds another layer to your Canada border crossing challenges, especially when van life travel is involved.
Conclusion
Despite unexpected Canada border crossing challenges, the experience of entering Canada from a small town was undeniably unique. Remember to have all necessary documentation handy to manage any unforeseen issues. Safe travels, and until next time, deuces!
