And this was just the beginning of our incredible journey through Banff National Park.

Seeing Our First Black Bear Cub
When we spotted the black bear cub, our hearts raced with excitement. It was right there, seemingly curious but unconcerned with our presence. The bear’s sleek black fur and small size made it look almost too cute to handle. Catching a glimpse of this wild animal so early in our trip set a thrilling tone for the rest of our adventure.
First Moments in Banff National Park
We had only been in the park for about 15–30 minutes before spotting the bear. This serendipitous encounter immediately raised our expectations for what was to come. We braced ourselves for more wildlife sightings and memorable moments.
Drive and Landscape
A Scenic Journey
The drive through Banff National Park is a visual feast. Towering mountains, lush forests, and serene lakes make it an unforgettable route. Even with just a dusting of snow on the peaks, the landscape is awe-inspiring. Imagining these mountains fully cloaked in snow was an enchanting thought; the views would be nothing short of magical.
Reflections on Visiting Canada
Initially, I wasn’t sold on the idea of coming to Canada. But after seeing the bear and the breathtaking landscapes, I couldn’t have been happier. The country has shown me sights I didn’t know I needed to see, and it has been a revelation.
Numa Falls
Park Map and Points of Interest
When we entered Banff National Park, the park staff handed us a map and circled several must-see points of interest. Numa Falls was high on that list. This spot is perfect for a relaxing walk, and the surrounding area is ideal for a picnic. Benches are scattered around, offering a comfortable place to sit and soak in the stunning scenery.
Experiencing Numa Falls
Numa Falls did not disappoint. The water was a mesmerizing shade of turquoise, and the falls roared with incredible power. We spent some time just absorbing the beauty, all while thinking how fortunate we were to be there. The area also offers facilities for visitors to relax and enjoy their meals amidst nature’s grandeur.
Olive Lake
A Comfortable First Hike
Our next stop was Olive Lake, and the hike to get there was a breeze. The path was well-marked and not too strenuous, making it the perfect way to start our day. It took us just five minutes to reach the lake, despite the map suggesting a 15-minute hike.
Olive Lake Was Stunning…
The Beauty of Olive Lake
Olive Lake was stunning. The water was crystal clear, and the surrounding landscape was calm and picturesque. If this was just the beginning of our adventure, we could only imagine what lay ahead.
Kootenay Overlook
Short Drive, Big Views
From Olive Lake, it was a short five-minute drive to our next destination, the Kootenay Overlook. Upon arriving, we were instantly captivated by the panoramic views. The landscape stretched out endlessly, offering a backdrop that was simultaneously majestic and serene.
Reflections on the Overlook
Standing there, with nature’s splendor all around, I felt immense gratitude. The beauty of the park seemed to grow with each stop, filling us with awe and appreciation for this incredible part of the world.
Marble Canyon
The Final Hike of the Day
Our last hike of the day led us to Marble Canyon. This hike was slightly more challenging, with some steep sections, but it was well worth the effort. The round trip took about 30 minutes, giving us just enough time to absorb the breathtaking surroundings.
Enjoying the Scenery Despite the Cold
The temperature had dropped dramatically by the time we reached Marble Canyon. The cold added a new layer of challenge, but it also highlighted the beauty of the pine trees and rugged landscape. These pine needles, scattered everywhere, felt like a scene straight out of Christmas. The hike through Marble Canyon was a fitting end to a day filled with natural wonders.
Banff Town Exploration
Arrival in Banff
After our adventures, we arrived in the charming town of Banff. With its cozy, Christmas-like ambiance, the town instantly won us over. Though we didn’t have a place to stay yet, we were drawn to its inviting atmosphere.
Seeking Out Dinner
Our wanderings led us to an Indian restaurant called Masala. The rich aromas wafting through the air promised a delicious meal, and we couldn’t resist. Despite a waiting time of 25 minutes, we decided to explore downtown Banff and take in the small-town charm.
Indian Restaurant Experience
Masala – A Culinary Delight
Deciding to eat at Masala proved to be an excellent choice. The restaurant was bustling, and the food smelled divine. I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala while my partner opted for Chicken Biryani. The busy ambiance reassured us that we were in for a treat.
Savoring a Black Cherry Cider
While waiting for our meal, I decided to try a black cherry cider. It was a unique experience; the drink was reminiscent of a black cherry seltzer with a slight alcoholic twist. It was refreshing and added a new flavor dimension to our dining adventure.
Beaver Tail Dessert
Ordering a Beaver Tail
For dessert, I ordered a beaver tail – a Canadian treat resembling a crunchy pancake topped with ice cream. I chose the brownie flavor, which looked both enticing and indulgent.
Tasting the Beaver Tail
Eating the beaver tail was pure joy. The combination of warm, soft dough with cold, sweet toppings was heavenly. Each bite was a perfect blend of textures and flavors, making it a perfect ending to a beautiful day.
